Alice Evelyn Collins (maiden name Newton)

Growing up in Australia, my maternal grandmother was my favorite person to Spend time with. As a child as far back as I remember and until I moved to Nashville, Evy , as she was called was my babysitter , and inspiration. She always had something delicious on the stove, chicken curry, tripe in white sauce with parsley ( really good) or soup, bread and butter or rice pudding etc. she was an amazing gardener. Could grow anything from seeds. Avocado tree, mango tree, passion fruit ,banana trees, herbs, flowers etc. When she was 20, she won a local beauty contest and was a real 20’s flapper! Got pregnant before she got married to my grandfather, Reginald Collins. She was the only liberal, socialist, member of my family who mostly on the right. Nan, as I called her , played the piano, read constantly when she wasn’t watching current affair shows, news and mind bending game shows. A small black and white tv or course. She showed me her family tree. Sir Isaac’s brother was her great great whatever grandfather. Isaac had no offspring as far as we know. Another ancestor of hers was John Newton, who was a slave trader, had a change of heart and wrote Amazing Grace. Sir Lionel Monkton was another ancestor of hers. She joined the Christian Science church during her marriage. Never drank or smoked or went to doctors. She died of a heart attack at age 78. Nan was so great. She would take me places, introduce me to people, music and books. And of course cooking, which is still my passion. She was my refuge from my mother, who was a stage mother and a terrible cook. When I was staying with her in visits back to Australia when I was about 20, if I went to my boyfriends place and didn’t come home till morning, she would say “hello dear, hope you had a lovely evening. Never an ounce of judgement. Miss her every day!
